We understand that many of today’s media stories and programmes include themes of rape, sexual abuse, and violence against women and girls. These topics can appear in soaps, films, documentaries, podcasts, and the news — often when you least expect them.
For survivors and those affected, this can feel overwhelming, distressing, or triggering. If this resonates with you, please know that you are not alone, support is available.
Below are some gentle ways you can look after yourself when these topics arise:
It’s okay to turn something off, skip content, or avoid certain programmes altogether. Your wellbeing matters.
Many platforms now provide guidance on sensitive topics, helping you make informed choices about what feels safe to engage with.
If something feels too much, take a break. Pause, switch off, or move to a different activity.
Simple practices — such as focusing on your breathing, noticing your surroundings, or holding something comforting can help you feel more present and safe.

Talking to someone you trust, whether that’s a friend, loved one, or a specialist support service, can help you process how you’re feeling.
After encountering difficult content, it can help to spend time in a space or with activities that feel calming and reassuring.
There is no “right” way to feel. Your reactions are valid, and it’s okay to take things at your own pace.

If you have been affected by anything you’ve seen or heard, we are here to support you. You can contact our team for confidential, specialist support whenever you feel ready
